Eye of the Beholder
Francine K. Affourtit in collaboration with Biennale Urbana
The Eye of the Beholder project is an action, archive, artwork, exhibition, and lab being created in collaboration with Biennale Urbana, International partners, and the local population of the Venetian Lagoon. In response to the mission of BURB, an organization aiming to develop ideas, practices, strategies, and tools to rethink the relationship between the Biennial system and the Venetian metropolis, the Eye of the Beholder will offer a platform for aesthetic engagement that draws inspiration from everyday inhabitants of the Lagoon.
First Act: Activating the abandoned military structure Caserma Pepe, in collaboration with the national organization Demanio and local associations Fispmed and Proloco, Biennale Urbana is creating space for aesthetic engagement with the public during the traditional Festa della Sensa on the Island of Lido in the Venetian Lagoon.
During this time period, Biennale Urbana will create a temporary studio for artist Francine Kay Affourtit to begin research and production on a new work inspired by the location and in exchange with the local population through workshops and demonstrations. This intensive artist residency in Caserma Pepe is part of Francine’s month long residency in Venice with Biennale Urbana.
